1968 – Maserati Ghibli

This black 1967 Maserati Ghibli belongs to the first year of production, preserving one of Giorgetto Giugiaro’s most important interpretations of the Italian Grand Touring car.

Unveiled on the Ghia stand at the 1966 Turin Motor Show, the Ghibli took its name from the hot, dry Libyan wind, following Maserati tradition. At a time when Lamborghini had introduced the Miura and Ferrari the 365 GTB, Maserati chose a different direction: not the pursuit of absolute performance, but a powerful grand tourer conceived around luxury, comfort and long-distance driving.

The Ghibli represents one of Giugiaro’s last and most complete expressions of the formal language of 1960s GT cars. Its long bonnet, animated beltline and high, full tail create a powerful and elegant profile, while the front introduces a new visual identity for Maserati through concealed headlights, a slim grille and taut geometric surfaces.

Its most innovative feature lies in the integration of the volumes. Body and cabin flow into one another with unusual continuity, creating the impression of a single sculpted surface and anticipating a more modern approach to automotive form.

The first examples were produced in March 1967, and the Ghibli remained in production until 1973. The example in the collection therefore belongs to the model’s earliest production period and preserves the original expression of one of Giugiaro’s most distinctive grand touring designs.
