The Alfa Romeo Alfasud could not be absent from the Giorgetto and Fabrizio Giugiaro Collection, as it represents a fundamental milestone in Giorgetto Giugiaro’s career and one of the projects in which his role extended far beyond styling alone.
The Alfasud project was launched at the end of the 1960s under the direction of Rudolf Hruska, as part of Alfa Romeo’s ambitious plan to establish a new production facility in Pomigliano d’Arco. Giugiaro’s young Turin-based company was involved not only in styling, but also in manufacturing methods, value analysis, prototype construction, model planning and development.
Working within strict parameters already defined by Hruska, Giugiaro developed a compact front-wheel-drive car distinguished by excellent aerodynamics, generous interior space and remarkable luggage capacity.
For Giugiaro, the Alfasud had a special significance: it was the first car he followed from beginning to end, taking part in the complete process that transformed an idea into a series-production automobile.
Presented in 1971 and produced from 1972, the Alfasud went on to become one of Alfa Romeo’s most important models of the period. The example preserved in the collection is an Alfasud L.
