1991 – BMW Nazca M12

The Nazca M12 marks Fabrizio Giugiaro’s first independent project, developed with the support of the Style, Models and Prototype Departments reporting directly to him. The project draws inspiration from his experience with Formula 1 and Group C racing, influences that can be recognized in the technical conception of the chassis, mechanical layout and overall architecture.

Conceived as a luxury GT with a centrally mounted engine, the Nazca M12 combines essential and elegant surfaces with a distinctly aggressive character. One of its most significant technical features is the one-piece carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, combined with a carbon-fibre body and light-alloy components to keep the overall weight below 1,100 kg.

A tubular subframe attached to the carbon tub supports the BMW 5.0-litre V12 engine, producing 300 HP, while a separate steel structure supports the glazed canopy surrounding the cockpit.

The Nazca M12 introduced several advanced solutions, including a carbon-fibre load-bearing chassis for a road-going GT, electronically self-levelling suspension, ABS and an anti-skid system, with driving modes configurable for dry or wet conditions.

The headlights are integrated directly into the inclined front profile, contributing to a drag coefficient of 0.30. One of the most distinctive elements is the T-Top roof, formed by two sections of smoked laminated glass with a concealed supporting frame. The glazed upper sections open upwards in gull-wing style, while the lower portions of the doors open conventionally, creating particularly easy access to the cockpit. The roof panels can also be removed, allowing an open-air driving experience.
