1993 – Bugatti EB 112

This prototype is one of only three Bugatti EB112 examples ever built and forms part of the Giugiaro Collection.

The story of the Bugatti EB112 relates to Romano Artioli, owner of the brand, and his desire to create, using Giugiaro’s design, a new flagship “heir” for the Bugatti family, to be assembled at the striking new complex in Campogalliano.

The Bugatti EB112 appeared in 1993 and was described as a masterpiece that marked an important moment in the history of automotive design: a return to classicism interpreted with unexpected creative freshness. In relaunching the Bugatti legend, Giugiaro explored a neoclassical language, recovering values from automotive history and translating them into a new contemporary expression.

The designer began with a careful analysis of Bugatti models of the past, including the 1932 Type 55 and the 1936 Type 57 S Atlantic, drawing from their aesthetic and functional qualities in order to give the new model the same expressive strength. To reinterpret Bugatti’s traditional sporting character, Giugiaro conceived a fastback body with a generous passenger compartment, comparable in space and comfort to that of a prestige sedan.

The result combined advanced technology with an aluminum body and a carbon-fiber chassis, an unprecedented solution for a car of this type. The EB112 thus became a synthesis of performance, prestige and refined design, in keeping with the tradition of the marque.

The car never entered production due to Bugatti’s financial difficulties at the time, and only three prototypes were ever built, making this example an exceptionally rare testimony to the project and to Giugiaro’s vision for the revival of the brand.
