1998 – Italdesign Structura

Italdesign Structura is a fully functioning prototype that was shaped to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Italdesign Giugiaro and later became the prototype accompanying Turin’s bid to host the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.

The project translates the combined experience of Giorgetto and Fabrizio Giugiaro into an architectural interpretation of the automobile, where the structure itself becomes the central element of the design. Rather than being concealed beneath the bodywork, the chassis and its key components are deliberately exposed and emphasized, while conventional sheet-metal panels are replaced by transparent glazed surfaces.

This approach transforms the technical architecture into part of the car’s visual identity, creating a direct relationship between structure, function and form.

Structura also explores accessibility and interior space through opposing doors that open from the centre. The absence of a conventional central pillar creates a wide opening, improving access to the cabin and reinforcing the sense of openness that characterizes the entire project.

As a functioning prototype, Structura represents not only a formal experiment but a tangible demonstration of an idea in which engineering and design become part of the same architectural language.
