The polystyrene design model preserved in the collection documents the reconstruction process of the Hyundai Pony Coupé, one of the most significant concepts created by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Hyundai’s debut at the 1974 Turin Motor Show.
Although the original prototype had been lost, the importance of the Pony Coupé remained intact over time. Its design influenced not only the early identity of Hyundai, but also several later production and concept cars, including the IONIQ 5 and the N Vision 74.
In 2023, Hyundai commissioned GFG Style to rebuild the car in keeping with its design philosophy, “Shaping the future with legacy.” Under the guidance and supervision of Fabrizio Giugiaro, the project was developed starting from original drawings, technical diagrams, archival photographs and a Hyundai chassis.
The design retains the key features that made the Pony Coupé so distinctive: origami-like geometric surfaces, a sleek roofline, pure and unadorned volumes, a sharply defined wedge-shaped front end, circular headlamps and a compact cut-off tail. The interior follows the same essential logic, with a driver-oriented layout, single-spoke steering wheel and slim two-tone bucket seats.
As a polystyrene design model, this piece preserves the project at the stage in which the original concept was studied, interpreted and translated back into three-dimensional form, making visible the design process that allowed a lost car to return from the archives into the present.
