City of Lausanne
The first organ ever conceived by a designer
With its seven-thousand pipes, the organ of Lausanne Cathedral is one of the most prestigious musical instruments in the world.
BRAND: City of Lausanne
MODEL: Organ
YEAR: 2003
CATEGORY: Public building
DESIGNER: Fabrizio Giugiaro
It is also the first European organ to be assembled by an American company (Charles B. Fisk, Massachusetts) as well as the first organ ever conceived by a designer, following a competition announced in 1998 by the Canton Vaud. In 2003, the splendid new organ, which cost 5 million Francs, was inaugurated on the occasion of the bicentennial of the Canton Vaud's joining the Swiss Con-federation. Two imposing, angel-like "wings" accommodate the pipes at the sides of the keyboards and protrude over the side nave of the cathedral, recalling the movement of an angels's wings.
