At the end of 1959, Alfa Romeo presented the Sprint version of its 2000, an important event in the brand's history not so much for its commercial success, but because it introduced a happy stylistic harmony destined to characterize in the future many granturismo or sports models signed by the Bertone coachworks.
The 2000 Sprint marked the debut of Giorgetto Giugiaro, who had recently been in the service of Nuccio Bertone. Set on a body with a wheelbase of 2.58 meters, it inherited the mechanicals from the Spider version: 1975 cm3 engine, 115 horsepower, two twin-body carburetors, 5-speed gearbox with cloche control on the floor. On this chassis Giugiaro designed a balanced two-door, four-seater coupe, with a bright, slim-pillar pavilion and roomy trunk in a nevertheless discreet, elusive tail. But the real originality lies in the front, with the four headlights incorporated into the grille so as to make a single volume between the hood and fenders: an innovation that would become law for almost every car, not just Alfa, to this day.
The side, in a similar pattern to that of the Giulietta Sprint, is completely smooth, with a chrome underdoor strip, the Bertone emblem mounted below the 2000 Sprint lettering on the front fender, and the rear wheel arches "cut out" by a sheet metal relief. The rear is truncated and without fins, with a recessed tail mirror within which are the headlights and license plate holder.
The 2000 series was produced between 1957 and 1962 when it was replaced by the higher performance 2600 series, which retained virtually the same aesthetic features imposed by Giugiaro.
