Research prototype for a hybrid electric-driven leisure car
Giugiaro’s aim in developing the running prototype Cinquecento Lucciola, premiered in 1993, has been to associate the concepts of leisure and ecology in an original new way.

The car it has come up with is a hybrid with electric traction, built with recyclable materials on an aluminium body. The car converts into a roadster; which is why it is especially suitable for leisure time driving. The prototype Cinquecento Lucciola is based on the same ID Cinquecento, a static model developed for the 1992 Turin Motor Show. The ID Cinquecento was the fruit of research carried out by Giugiaro as part of Fiat's initiative to pay homage to the 500 myth, a "classic" in the history of cars, by inviting ANFIA associates to build their own interpretations of the Cinquecento concept on a single standard exemplar. Giugiaro restyled the standard car without altering the mechanicals, dimensions and cockpit layout and developed a single-box coupé that converted into an open car. The design was at once highly innovative and extremely practical, ready as it was for mass production at relatively low investment costs.
