Its mass production began in the same year and continued until 2023. The Move model was designed and put into production to strengthen Daihatsu Motor Company's position in the kei-car segment, which is the segment of micro-cars using small displacement engines and low kerb weight typical of Japan. The Move model was Daihatsu's response to the Suzuki Wagon R. Fabrizio Giugiaro was responsible for the design of the second version of the Daihatsu Move, which was put on the market starting in 1998. Giugiaro's version is notable for its pursuit of an even more MPV-like shape, which focuses on breadth of space while being very compact in size.
