Giugiaro aimed at giving the volumes overall cleanness and softness in order to reap the utmost aerodynamic benefit. From this standpoint, the Medusa is in all respects the child of the Asso di Picche. He introduced fixed windows flush with the exterior; he designed bumpers built into the shape of the hoods; he positioned the sill area towards the outside of the flank to protect the wheel bays; he carved out a recess in the belt fascia above the sill area to reduce the main section; and, finally, he fitted a spoiler onto the base of the rear window. Once established on paper, show cars are usually turned directly into wooden beating models for the prototype to be made. This was a different case, with an intermediate phase of wind tunnel tests. A comparison of the original drawing with the finished prototype reveals how conceptually well-done the Medusa was at the outset in terms of aerodynamics, because the refining in the wind tunnel did not modify the shape suggested in the sketches, if only in small details.

Panda 4x4 Strip

  • Brand: Fiat
  • Subtitle: Never got past the one-off stage, but was imitated by many
  • Intro: The Strip was Giugiaro's proposal of a multipurpose car essentially intended for young people: for off-road driving, leisure time, the mountains and the beach.
  • Technical specifications:

    MODEL: Panda 4x4 Strip

It was also equipped to be used as a pick-up work vehicle for all those companies that operate on normally uneven or especially slippery ground during the winter months. The Strip mounts the same mechanical assembly as the Offroader. In its "strip" version the car sports a windshield (more upright than in the production model) that, hinged at the windshield base, can be flattened down and fastened to the hood. The cross-piece of the door was kept intact and acts as a central roll-bar. The rear beams, cross-piece and C-pillars were instead built into a separate subassembly that could be dismantled.

Panda 4x4 Offroader

  • Brand: Fiat
  • Subtitle: The development of one of the souls of the Panda
  • Intro: The intention with the Panda 4x4 was to highlight the underlying themes of the Panda project and demonstrate the versatility of a car which can be used as the basis for a wide range of interpretations, and not just on the bodywork.
  • Technical specifications:

    BRAND: Fiat

    MODEL: Panda 4x4 Offroader

The engineering idea, covered by patent, was developed by Giugiaro’s Mechanical Design Department and was transferred after the presentation of the cars at the 1980 Turin Motor Show to the Fiat group, who in cooperation with the Austrian company Steyr-Puch put the Panda 4x4 in production in June 1983. The Panda 4x4 retains the body of the production car, while the interior features sophisticated leather trim with slip-on coverings that necessitated no modifications to the pressed production parts. The instrument cluster, unchanged, saw the addition of an attitude gauge: uphill, downhill and axial.

Thanks to the success of the Golf, Fiat President Umberto Agnelli and Lancia's CEO Giovanni Sguazzini entrusted Giugiaro with the design of the "Y5," a new compact-class passenger car. The model with fastback body style was planned as a means of launching a new era at Lancia leveraging on the history of the traditional brand from Borgo San Paolo, which for so many decades had stood for prestige, class, quality, performance, reliability, and individuality.

The Lancia Delta was unveiled at the 1979 German Motor Show in Frankfurt. The Delta's lines were continuous, well defined, and clear. They described geometrical shapes and motifs, trapezes and truncated pyramids. In the Delta, which appeared a few years after the Golf, Giugiaro was able to correct a major shortcoming of the German top seller: this time there was distinctly more space for rear-seat passengers. The new model was more competitive than other compact fastback sedan in this class.

For this new symbol of Lancia policy, Giugiaro was allocated sufficient funds for high-class interior equipment and trim, including top-quality fabrics and workmanship. The front of the Delta proudly displayed the new radiator grill echoing the earlier Lancia grill in classic coat-of-arms style. It was intended effectively to act as a guideline through the whole subsequent model range. The tailgate extended down as far as the rear bumper, which made loading and unloading luggage and similar items much easier. In order to match with the rest of the car, for Delta the company resorted to painting front and rear plastic underbodies.

Delta was the only Lancia model to ever be chosen "Car of the Year" (in 1980); other versions of the Delta appeared in the mid-1980s: the Lancia Delta HF 4WD and the Integrale 16V based on the 4x4 transmission system. With these turbocharged versions in motor-sport trim, Lancia dominated the rally scene for some years, with six successive world championship titles (1987 to 1992).
