In 1974, when Hyundai Motor was still in its early days of vehicle production, the company’s executives contacted Giorgetto Giugiaro to propose work on designing Hyundai’s first independent model and Korea’s first mass-produced car. At the time, there was no vehicle design and styling capability in Korea, so Hyundai Motor commissioned Giugiaro to design, make blueprints and build five prototypes.

Chassis and mechanical assemblies from the Mitsubishi Lancer were to be used as a basis, and the product had to be readied for volume production at the lowest possible cost. Chung wanted to call it Pony to conjure up the picture of a sympathetic small horse almost as attractive as a foal, but strong and reliable. Giugiaro gave the Pony a contemporary look without over-emphasizing any futuristic features.

While developing the Pony, Giugiaro also worked on its own initiative on a 2+2 Coupe with elegant, inspired visual features. It was intended to polish up the image of the new brand and, at President Chung's wish, be named simply Hyundai Pony Coupe.

In the process of designing and prototyping, Hyundai decided to show the Pony and Pony Coupe at the Turin Motor Show to promote the brand’s debut in the global market, in the presence of the Korean ambassador and in a grand ceremony. The overall reaction at the motor show was definitely positive: the international media became aware that a new manufacturer was now active in Korea and was clearly determined to play an important role on the international scene.

The launch of the Golf, such an important car the for Volkswagen, took place in Munich in 1974 and was greeted with widespread approval from the market. The CEOs who followed President Rudolf Leidling, the one who approved the project, were able to build on the success of the Golf over the years with a vast range of engines and trim levels, winning over millions of users worldwide.

The car that emerged from the Golf project was the complete opposite - maybe deliberately so - of Ferdinand Porsche's Beetle: it had a front engine, front-wheel drive configuration rather than the "everything at the rear" design of the 1927 car, while the engine itself had four in-line cylinders and liquid cooling rather than four air-cooled opposed cylinders; the technical cornerstones of the marque were therefore set aside once and forever.

It was a very compact fastback sedan with squared-off formal elements. Inside, there was ample space for the driver and front passenger. Giorgetto Giugiaro sketched out a fastback body, but one with the vertical alignment emphasized. Important features were low weight, good handling, a tailgate that wrapped around at the sides, and a rear window slightly recessed within the side posts. The rear overhang was kept short and the complete rear end with its reinforcements was vertically oriented, so that the car had a sporty, dynamic look.

The angular styling of the Golf created something of a stir, leaving old-school designers open-mouthed, but it did manage to establish a reputation as a lively, innovative car that caught everyone's imagination and pointed the way to a new direction in the design of small hatchback cars. The Golf project was one of the most important in Giugiaro’s career.

The first generation Golf, the only one designed by Giugiaro, went out of production in 1983 with a total of 6.99 million cars having been produced. The following generations of the Golf have today sold over 21 million units. This was performance that had never been matched in the automotive world and it continues today with the seventh generation.

The philosophy underlying this study is summed up in the car's name, Medici, in homage to the celebrated Florence family that won fame and prestige by linking to business aptitude a renewed existential outlook, the enjoyment of beauty and the love for culture and the arts. Giugiaro thus sought a shape that would not turn heads for opulence and an abundance of kitschy details, but for the balance and elegance of its design. Shape-wise the Medici is reminiscent of the Asso di Picche, looking almost like its fourdoor "big sister".

This car was definitely an interlocutory move on Giugiaro's part: too similar to the Boomerang, whose geometrical tension it tries to repeat in a toned-down shape, it was not able to assert an image of its own. If analyzed piece by piece, certain of its details may be convincing, but still it pales next to the smaller and more modest Pony Coupé, decidedly fresh and innovative.

This study had been born independently, but a few days before the opening of the 1974 Turin Motor Show, the management of the Korean firm took it into serious consideration and asked that it be called the Hyundai Pony Coupé. That Giugiaro had a completely free hand in this very sleek and extremely graphic coupé is obvious. A penetrating front end and decidedly high tail, a very long back side window framed by a thin C-pillar that renders the side view light and sharp. References to the previous Audi Karmann Asso di Picche in the treatment of the surface areas and in the built-in bumpers painted the same color as the body are clear.
